Addaction responds to Kit Malthouse replacing Victoria Aitkens as the Minister responsible for drug policy

Kit Malthouse is now the government minister responsible for drug policy, taking over the role from Victoria Aitkens.

Karen Tyrell, Spokesperson for drug and alcohol charity Addaction, said:

“We welcome the news that Kit Malthouse has become the Minister responsible for drug policy and look forward to working with him. On average, 12 people a day die of drug related causes in England and Wales. These are deeply worrying numbers which keep increasing. Every one one of these deaths is a tragedy. Every one of them is preventable.

“We hope this appointment represents a new direction where drug use is treated as a health issue instead of a criminal justice one. At the same time we need to properly fund the harm reduction measures that keep people alive and the treatment services that help them turn their lives around.”
