Every year,  on 12 May - the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth - we celebrate International Nurses Day around the world. It offers us a moment to pause, reflect, and recognise the enormous contribution nurses make to healthcare.

At WithYou, that contribution is both unique and vital.

Our nurses work across a wide range of settings - in community clinics, GP surgeries, hospitals and prisons - supporting people experiencing some of the most complex and challenging circumstances. The people who come through our doors are often navigating not just drug or alcohol challenges, but trauma, stigma, mental health issues, or isolation. It takes more than just clinical skill to support them - it requires remarkable dedication, patience and expertise.

The theme for International Nurses Day 2025 is the health and wellbeing of nurses - something that feels especially relevant right now. Across the UK, nursing teams are working in increasingly stretched environments, often balancing high workloads and limited resources. In drug and alcohol services, those pressures can be even more complex. It’s a specialist area that isn’t always fully understood or recognised, yet it demands real clinical expertise, emotional strength, and the ability to manage complex risk with compassion and care.

But our nurses continue to show up. They bring care without judgement. They offer hope where others may have given up. And they do it not for praise, but because they believe in people’s potential to change, to recover, and to rebuild.

So this International Nurses Day, I’d like to thank you for all that you do — not just as healthcare professionals, but as everyday heroes who show up with heart, hope, and humanity - and to share how deeply appreciated you are. Your role in creating healthier, safer, more compassionate communities is critical, and it deserves to be seen and supported.

Wherever you’re working today, I hope you can take a moment for yourself.
