Drug and alcohol charity WithYou in North Lincolnshire have partnered with community interest company, The Blue Door to launch a new programme which aims to help people change harmful behaviours in intimate relationships.
In Humberside, which includes North Lincolnshire, the rate of domestic abuse-related incidents and crimes stands at 39.9 per 1,000 people - higher than England’s national rate of 27.1.
The new programme called The Mirrors Project, is designed to help men change harmful behaviours in intimate relationships while ensuring victims and survivors receive dedicated, concurrent support.
The programme is available to adults aged 18 and over who recognise they have issues with alcohol or drugs, are willing to engage with treatment and are motivated to make positive changes. It is also for people who acknowledge that their behaviour towards a current or former partner has been abusive.
“Substance use doesn’t cause abuse, but we know it can escalate it,” explains Kate House, Head of Service Delivery at WithYou in North Lincolnshire. “Every part of the programme is built around one question: is this making the victim safer? The Mirrors Project is clinically-led, tightly monitored, and sits alongside - not instead of - accountability. By bringing together drug and alcohol treatment with specialist domestic abuse support, we are creating a system that addresses the underlying issues and places the safety and wellbeing of survivors at its very heart.”
People who are unsure whether the programme is right for them can discuss their circumstances during an initial conversation. Where someone is unable to take part, they will be given clear reasons and appropriate support, with the safety of current or former partners remaining a priority.
Support is delivered over a number of weekly sessions tailored to the individual's needs with a focus on challenging harmful beliefs, building accountability and empathy, and developing healthier coping strategies around drugs and alcohol. The Blue Door will support and safeguard victims throughout, and keep them updated on the perpetrator’s progress.
Stephanie Price, Chief Executive Officer of The Blue Door Support Service CIC, said:
“We know that ending domestic abuse means not only supporting victims and survivors but also finding effective ways to challenge harmful behaviour and prevent further abuse.
“The Mirrors Project is a great example of innovative partnership working. By bringing our specialist domestic abuse support together with WithYou’s expertise, we can challenge harmful behaviour, strengthen accountability and, most importantly, keep the safety and wellbeing of victims and survivors at the heart of the work.”
