At WithYou, we believe that workplace wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do.

Our commitment to supporting individuals through their recovery journeys extends to our dedicated staff. We strive to ensure our team feels empowered, resilient, and valued every day.

That’s why we proudly invest in Mental Health First Aid training with Mental Health First Aid England. This equips our teams with the confidence and skills not only to support one another but also to truly thrive in their roles.

Mental health challenges can affect anyone at any time. In the demanding environment of a drug and alcohol charity, our staff face unique pressures - supporting clients through some of the most challenging moments of their lives, while also looking after their own wellbeing.

We recognise the importance of providing practical tools and fostering a supportive culture, helping everyone at WithYou to flourish.

Meet Gemma and Ricky, two dedicated Mental Health First Aiders at WithYou in Cornwall. Gemma, a Prescribing Administrator, ensures clients receive essential prescriptions for controlled drugs to support their recovery.

Gemma Hulme, Mental Health First Aider

Ricky, a passionate Recovery Worker, offers support and advice to individuals dealing with alcohol or substance misuse by helping them understand their situation and accessing the resources they need.

“What I enjoy most about being a Mental Health First Aider is having a positive impact on others,” says Gemma.

I think it’s important to ask how people are - then ask again, and really listen to the response. The world is a busy place, and I worry that people are losing that sense of connection. I also value the personal growth this role brings - it’s a great reminder to look after my own mental health.

“I love creating a supportive environment, open conversations, and transparency in the hope that this helps reduce the stigma around mental health. It also helps with active listening and communication, which can flag up early warning signs, which, with intervention, may help prevent a situation escalating into a crisis.”

Ricky Curtis, Mental Health First Aider

Ricky shares a similar sentiment: “One of the things I love most about my work is that every day is different, and that I have the opportunity to support or help someone when they might really feel alone.

It means a lot to let someone know they're not alone - that there's someone there for them, even if they don’t always reach out.”

Ricky’s journey into mental health support is rooted in his own lived experience.

I wanted to be another pair of eyes and ears in those moments for people who might not be able to see a way through. I hope to be that outsider - someone they can talk to freely and without judgement. As someone with lived experience, I feel I have more to give back, and I can use my experiences to support others.

Thinking about becoming a Mental Health First Aider? Ricky's advice: “Do it! More Mental Health First Aiders means more awareness and less stigma around mental health.”

If you, or someone you know, is experiencing challenges with drugs, alcohol or their mental health, WithYou is here to help.
