Addaction responds to the Gambling Commision banning the use of credit cards
On 14/01/2020, The Gambling Commission announced it's banning gambling businesses from allowing consumers to use credit cards to place bets.
Robin Pollard, Policy Researcher at drug, alcohol and mental health charity Addaction, said:
“This reform is welcome and will help prevent some people amassing large gambling debts. Over the past few years we’ve seen more and more people experiencing issues with gambling. Our own polling found that people with a history of problem gambling are more likely to have experienced anxiety, depression and problematic alcohol or drug use. But only 2% of problem gamblers are accessing support. Meanwhile, the gambling industry made over £14bn in profit last year but only put a fraction of this money towards funding treatment.
“It’s clearly not right that profits soar at the expense of people’s wellbeing. We need to build on this momentum and introduce a formal levy on the industry to raise money for more and better treatment services.”
