Meet the 63-year-old former IT professional who found his purpose in recovery support

Ken, Cornwall

After a 30-year career working in IT for an American software company, Ken found himself at a crossroads. At 63, he took a leap of faith by volunteering with WithYou in Cornwall. A decision that would transform his life and the lives of people around him.

“I started doing a lot of research online, and I was horrified to see how people could be stigmatised and marginalised because of issues with drugs and alcohol,” says Ken. “I knew that I wanted to make a difference, so I started looking for volunteering opportunities, which is how I came across WithYou.”

“After my initial training with Billy, Community Engagement Co-ordinator, I was completely sold. I was convinced this was something I really wanted to do.”

Ken describes the training as engaging, with trainers who were “grounded, very sincere and wonderful human beings.” Right from the start, he knew he’d made the right choice.

The impact of volunteering was immediate. “I couldn’t believe the effect it had on me,” Ken shares. “The team and the clients were so welcoming, and I felt that I belonged. This was what I was supposed to be doing.”

After completing the volunteer training, Ken quickly took on more responsibilities, including driving clients to appointments and facilitating Mutual Aid Partnership groups in North East Cornwall.

“I started co-facilitating the group with Victoria, a recovery worker, and helping with recovery support check-ins,” says Ken. “I also found driving quite rewarding by being able to listen to people’s experiences and making them feel at ease.”

Volunteering opened Ken’s eyes to the challenges individuals face during their recovery journey. Feeling inspired, he began pursuing additional qualifications.
In the last 12 months, Ken has become a certified hypnotherapist and a qualified counsellor.

After a year of volunteering, Ken’s dedication has led to a full-time paid position as a recovery worker at WithYou. “I’ve gone from volunteering to paid employee in 12 months, and I have enjoyed every moment,” Ken says, reflecting on his journey.

Ken’s advice to others is simple: “I would recommend volunteering with WithYou to anybody who wants to help people.”

Ken’s experience is a reminder that new beginnings are possible at any age. With community support and a willingness to take the first step, anyone can find renewed purpose and make a real difference in the lives of others.
